The test is to photograph something more random - that 45mpix provides no information on - pixel shift or AI can’t restore the lost information (if they are we need to talk to NASA as they are then breaking the laws of physics!) - completely pointless upgrade. I suspect any perceived gain in resolution is similar to AI upscale in programs like Topaz - they essentially guess what is missing. The pixel size of the R5 is 4.4microns - for 400mpix the effective pixel size must be 1.4microns - that is the same size as the main diffraction lobe of a perfectly corrected F2 lens. At best the colour improves (because each pixel now has RGB values), any moire is reduced and a small amount of extra resolution is teased from the lens. The images from the pixel shift function are never going to approach 400mpix resolution because none of the RF lenses are capable of this resolution and no amount of pixel shifting or indeed replacing the 45mpix sensor with a 400mpix one would change that. CANON EOS R FIRMWARE UPDATE
An EOS RP-specific update on version 1.3.0 sees a fix for “a phenomenon in which the main dial icon is not displayed when pressing the zoom in/out button while the image is playing”.
In the case of the EOS R, a bug that saw the AF frame size remain static in Servo AF mode has now been fixed, and users should now be able to change the AF frame from small to ‘normal’, depending on the situation. The cameras will also now be able to focus on and track smaller subjects, so keeping up with your playful retriever puppy or tracking a cheetah on your safari trip will be easier. With the new update, both cameras will be able to lock onto a subject’s face and eye from further away than previously, although no specific details have been provided on how much this has improved. The biggest issue users faced during testing the two full-frame cameras was the significant lag between the AF system locking onto a subject and the appearance of the blue focus box on the viewfinder.
